In the blue off the deeper southern walls — Punta Sur, Colombia Deep and Maracaibo — usually a single animal passing below or outside the group.

A wary open-water patroller. Sightings in Cozumel are opportunistic rather than reliable, and almost always at distance on a deep southern dive.

Blacktip shark — Blacktips have obvious black fin tips on top as well as underneath, and are more surface-oriented.
Bull shark — Bull sharks are far heavier through the body with a blunt snout; in Cozumel they are a seasonal, site-specific encounter.
