Getting around Cozumel comes down to a handful of options, and most diving trips end up using more than one of them.

Taxis do the everyday work: the ride to the pier in the morning, the run back in the afternoon, dinner and home again. A rented car opens up the east coast and the shore-diving entries, which is why many visitors rent for a day or two rather than for the whole trip. Scooters and ATVs are the cheaper version of the same idea and ask more of the rider. The passenger ferry connects the island to Playa del Carmen for a mainland day. Agreeing a taxi fare before you get in is normal here rather than rude, and worth doing every time. How much of each you use tends to be decided by whether the trip includes a day away from the reef.

How do you get around Cozumel?
Taxis for short hops and evenings, a pre-arranged transfer for the airport, and a rental car or scooter for a full day exploring the island. There is no visitor bus network to speak of. Most divers use taxis all week and rent a car for one day to see the east coast and the inland sites.
Are Cozumel taxis metered?

Do I need a rental car in Cozumel?
Not for a diving trip. The shops, the piers and the restaurants are concentrated in and around town, and dive shops often arrange pickup. A car earns its keep for one or two days if you want the east coast, San Gervasio or Punta Sur at your own pace.
Can I take a taxi with dive gear?
Yes, and it is completely routine here — drivers carry divers every morning. A standard sedan takes a diver with a bag; a full set of gear for several people is worth mentioning when you call. Bag wet gear so it does not soak the seats.
How do I get from the airport to my hotel?
Shared and private transfers run from the airport, and taxis are available from the airport but not always back to it, which surprises people. Several hotels include or arrange the transfer. Book the return leg in advance rather than assuming you can flag one down.
Is a scooter a good idea?
For confident riders on a dry day, it is a cheap way to see the island. Weigh it honestly: unfamiliar roads, traffic in town, and rain that arrives quickly. Check what your travel insurance covers before renting one.
