Renting a car in Cozumel is worth it for one specific reason: the parts of the island a taxi will not wait around for.
The shore-diving entries, the east coast, the southern parks and the beach clubs at the far ends all become straightforward with a vehicle and awkward without one. Most visitors rent for a day or two rather than the whole trip, which is usually the right call given how much of a diving week is spent on a boat anyway. The things that catch people out are in the paperwork rather than the driving: insurance requirements, the fuel policy, the deposit and what happens to it, and who is allowed to drive. Read the rental terms before you sign rather than at the counter.
The listings below cover the rental agencies operating on the island, with the details each one publishes. For the coast that makes a car worth having, see the beach clubs directory, and the guide to Cozumel shore diving covers the entries you can reach with one.
