The instructor is named, and the credentials are specific. The shop is led by Jose Arosemena — a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, a Technical Diving Instructor, and a TDI Full Cave Diver. On an island where the overwhelming majority of diving is recreational reef drifting, that combination is rare.
It matters for two groups of divers. If you are moving into technical diving or overhead environments, you want an instructor who actually holds those ratings rather than a shop that outsources it. And if you are a recreational diver, being taught by someone qualified far beyond the level you are working at tends to raise the standard of everything below it.

Location and Logistics
Marina Caleta sits south of San Miguel, in the same stretch as most of the island's boat operations. Because the model is private, arrangements are made individually rather than around a fixed departure — confirm timing directly.
Who It Is Best For
Divers progressing into technical or cave diving. Anyone who wants one-to-one instruction from an instructor they can name and check. Recreational divers who would rather not share a boat with fifteen others. Divers working on skills rather than accumulating dives.
Less suited to divers who simply want a cheap seat on a two-tank morning boat — this is not that product.
The Team
Cozumel Abyss is family owned and operated, founded in October 2020, with a stated focus on private guiding and instruction and an explicit position that the priority is quality rather than volume.
Jose Arosemena is the owner and chief instructor, holding PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, TDI Full Cave Diver, Technical Diving Instructor and Emergency First Response Instructor ratings. Delaney Kepple is managing partner, Ivonne Flores manages equipment, and Marco Ordoñez handles the Playa del Carmen excursions.
Working languages are English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese.
How Far The Training Goes
This is the deepest training list of any small operation on the island. Recreational courses run from Discover Scuba through Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Master Scuba Diver and Divemaster, with Emergency First Response and Emergency Oxygen Provider alongside.
Fifteen specialties are offered, including Drift, Boat, Peak Performance Buoyancy, Navigation, Night, Deep, Wreck and Sidemount.
Beyond recreational limits, the shop teaches Tec 50 — advanced nitrox and decompression procedures — and cave diving through TDI. Very few Cozumel operations go there.
Trips And Facilities
Guided private boat service takes up to six passengers. Mainland cenote excursions are run, which is where the cave training becomes relevant rather than theoretical.
The shop handles Nitrox fills, equipment rental, cleaning and storage. It is based at Marina Caleta. Hotel pick-up is not published.
One Thing About Diving Cozumel
Cozumel sits close to the cenotes of the mainland, and the two are completely different diving. The reef is warm, blue and moving; a cenote is still, fresh, cold by comparison, and overhead. Doing both in one trip is common, and it is why cave and technical training on this island has a genuine market rather than being a badge.
