Restaurante El Moro

El Moro is out in the Emiliano Zapata neighbourhood on 75 Bis Avenida Norte, a long way from the waterfront and entirely uninterested in tourist foot traffic. It has been run by the same family for decades and the orange-and-brown dining room has barely changed, which is exactly why islanders keep going.

What To Order

Fresh ceviche and fish tacos are the headline, but the menu runs deep into Yucatecan and Mexican staples: pollo, seafood plates, and the house specials that regulars order without looking. Portions are generous and prices sit well below the Melgar waterfront.

Good To Know

Open 1:00pm to 10:00pm and closed on Thursdays, so check the day before you commit to the taxi. It is a genuinely local room, not a polished one, and Spanish helps but is not required. Call ahead on +52 987 872 3029 if you are a larger group. Because it is inland it is quiet and there is no sea view, which is part of the appeal.

Getting There

75 Bis Avenida Norte 124 in Emiliano Zapata, well east of the waterfront grid. This is a taxi trip rather than a walk from downtown, about ten minutes from the malecon, and worth arranging your return ride or asking the restaurant to call one.
