Mermaid Divers Cozumel is a small, personalised PADI dive operation in Cozumel, Mexico, run by Sandra Bruckmann — a German national with permanent Mexican residency who has been a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer since 2015. The shop's operating philosophy is stated plainly: "scuba diving should never feel rushed or crowded."

That translates into the tightest published ratios of any shop on this site. Fun dives run at a maximum of four certified divers per PADI Instructor. Courses run at a maximum of two students per instructor. Not four students, not six — two. For anyone learning to dive, or returning to it after a gap, that is close to private instruction at group pricing.

Guides and instruction are available in English, German, French and Spanish, which is an unusually wide language range for a Cozumel operation and makes the shop a natural fit for European visitors.

Dive trips: two boat dives on a morning or afternoon trip with your own equipment, 2,400 MXN. Night diving (a twilight and a night dive), 2,800 MXN. Blackwater dive, 3,400 MXN. Snorkelling at two sites including equipment and guide, 1,700 MXN. Equipment rental, 400 MXN per day. Nitrox tanks, 200 MXN per tank. Large Aluminium 100 tanks, 200 MXN per tank. Torch rental, 100 MXN.

Courses, all including taxes and fees: Discover Scuba Diving 3,600 MXN (one day, from age 10, two boat dives). PADI Open Water 10,000 MXN (three days, from age 10, three shore dives and two boat dives). PADI Advanced Open Water 10,000 MXN (two days, from age 12, five adventure dives with no final exam). PADI Rescue 10,000 MXN (three days, from age 12, 20 logged dives required), with the CPR and First Aid course at 3,600 MXN. PADI Enriched Air/Nitrox 6,000 MXN (a day and a half, from age 12, including two nitrox boat dives). Refresher course 1,900 MXN (half a day, one supervised shore dive).

Course prices include a PADI Instructor, full gear, theory, entrance fees, taxes and lunch on the boat.

The two-students-per-instructor cap on courses is the standout. Most dive schools anywhere run four to eight students per instructor. Two means the instructor watches your mask clear, your buoyancy and your air the entire time — which is the difference between passing a course and actually being comfortable underwater afterwards.
