Taqueria El Amigo Mario runs a schedule almost nobody else on Cozumel does: doors at 6:30am, closed by 1:00pm. It is a small operation on Calle 5 Sur in the Adolfo Lopez Mateos neighbourhood, and the customers are almost entirely people on their way to work.

What To Order

Morning tacos, cooked and served fast. This is the pre-dawn end of Mexican street food rather than the al pastor-and-beer end, so expect the fillings to be whatever has been slow-cooked overnight. Get there early: the good stuff goes first and the place shuts when the day is done, not when the clock says so.

Cash only, pesos, no cards. Open every day 6:30am to 1:00pm. For divers this is the single most useful listing in this category, because it is one of very few places on the island where you can eat properly at 7:00am before a morning two-tank without settling for a hotel buffet.
