PADI vs SSI: Does It Actually Matter Which You Choose?

Neither is better, and no dive centre anywhere will refuse you for holding the other one.

Both PADI and SSI are members of the World Recreational Scuba Training Council, both meet the same minimum standards, and both certifications are recognised globally with no expiry.

The differences are real but small, and none of them affect the diving.

SSI is often slightly cheaper because materials are included rather than purchased separately. On a full Open Water course the gap is usually under $100.

PADI has more centres. If you dive in unusual places, you will find a PADI shop more often. In Cozumel this is irrelevant — both are everywhere.

SSI allows more flexible sequencing. Instructors can reorder some skills. In practice this matters to the instructor, not to you.

What actually determines the experience

The instructor and the group size — not the agency.

An SSI instructor with three students will teach you better than a PADI instructor with eight, and the reverse is equally true. Ratios, patience and willingness to spend an extra session on a skill you are struggling with: those are the variables.

There is no agency worth preferring here. Choose the centre first, then accept whichever agency it teaches — and some, such as Studio Blue, locally owned and diving since 1990, teach both, which makes the question moot. Our dive centre guide covers what to ask.

Crossing over

You can move between agencies freely. An SSI Open Water diver can take PADI Advanced. A PADI Rescue Diver can do SSI Divemaster. No conversion course, no fee, no paperwork beyond showing your card.

The only place agency choice starts to matter is professional training — Divemaster and Instructor — where you generally stay in one system through the pathway. Even then, crossovers exist.
