ScubaLuis Cozumel: The Complete Guide

The concierge-style Cozumel shop for divers who want six people on the boat and a say in where it goes

ScubaLuis was founded on 5 June 2016 by Luis, a divemaster who had spent five years inside another Cozumel operation before its owner sold up. He started his own shop specifically to strip out the parts of a busy dive day that feel rushed. The result is a two-boat operation that carries no more than six to eight divers, lets divers pick the sites, collects southern-zone guests from their hotel by boat, and takes your gear away at the end of the day to rinse, dry and store overnight.

That last detail is a fair summary of the whole approach. ScubaLuis is not competing on tank count or price — it does not publish prices at all. It competes on how the day feels.

Why Choose ScubaLuis

The number on the boat. ScubaLuis states plainly that there are "no more than 6-8 divers on a boat". On Cozumel, where a busy operator may put twelve or more divers behind a guide, that ceiling changes the dive: shorter entries, less waiting, a guide who can actually see everyone, and far less chance of losing the group in a current.

Diver-chosen sites. Most Cozumel shops run a rotation set the night before by the shop, not by you. ScubaLuis offers customisable dive experiences in which divers select the sites. With six to eight people aboard, honouring a request for Palancar Caves or Devil's Throat is realistic rather than a polite maybe.

The founder's history. Luis worked as a divemaster for five years at another well-known island operation before that business was sold. Diving Style and Experience

Diving with ScubaLuis is Cozumel drift diving on the island's leeward reef line, run from small, fast boats with a low diver count.

The experience is deliberately unhurried. The site describes towels waiting for you, a souvenir water bottle, snacks, fresh fruit and cold drinks between dives — details that matter more than they sound when you are sitting through a surface interval in the sun.

ScubaLuis runs both fun dives and dive courses. Crew are described as PADI certified and speaking both English and Spanish.

Courses and Training

ScubaLuis is a PADI operation and states that it features "both dive trips and dive courses", with divemasters and instructors who are PADI certified and bilingual in English and Spanish.

What the site does not do is publish a course list or course prices. There is no page enumerating Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue or specialty offerings with costs attached. Boats and Group Size

ScubaLuis runs two boats: the Ranger and the Mantarraya. The site describes them as "new, fast, clean, well-maintained, and comfortable", with coverage from the sun, and calls the Ranger "a beautiful and fast dive boat".

Hull lengths, engine specifications and passenger capacities are not published. What is published is the number that actually matters day to day.

Location and Getting There

ScubaLuis does not publish a street address on its website. There is no shopfront address, no map pin and no listed opening hours — contact is by phone, through the site's contact page, or by Facebook Messenger.

What the site does describe is how you actually get on the boat: for guests staying in Cozumel's southern hotel zone, ScubaLuis picks divers up by boat directly from the hotel. That is a genuine convenience — it removes the taxi into town and the walk along a pier with a kit bag.

If you are staying downtown or on the north side, you will need to agree a meeting point with ScubaLuis when you book. Ask for it explicitly, because it is not published.

Prices and What's Included

ScubaLuis does not publish prices. There are no rates for two-tank trips, courses, rental equipment, nitrox or private charters anywhere on the site, and no marine park fee guidance. The site directs pricing enquiries to phone, email, Facebook Messenger or the contact page.

What the site does specify is included on a dive day: dry towels, a souvenir water bottle, snacks, fresh fruit and cold drinks. For divers booking several days, ScubaLuis will "take your gear, thoroughly rinse it after every dive trip, and hang it to dry in our secure storage area", so equipment stays at the shop between days.

Three questions worth asking when you request a quote:

1. Is the Cozumel Marine Park fee included, or charged separately on the day?
2. Are tanks, weights and rental equipment included, and at what rate if not?
3. Is nitrox available, and what does a fill cost? Nitrox is not mentioned anywhere on the ScubaLuis site.

Who It Suits Best

Divers who care most about the number on the boat. Six to eight is at the small end of the Cozumel market, and it is stated rather than implied.

Divers with a site wish list. If you have come to dive Santa Rosa Wall, Palancar Caves or Devil's Throat specifically, an operation that lets divers choose sites is the right structure.

Guests in the southern hotel zone. Boat pickup straight from the hotel is a meaningful daily saving in time and hassle.

Multi-day divers. The overnight gear rinse, dry and storage service is aimed squarely at people diving three, four or five days in a row.

Divers who want continuity. A two-boat, owner-founded shop means the same faces across a week rather than a different guide each morning.

Who Might Prefer a Different Shop

Divers who need a price before they enquire. This is the clearest limitation. ScubaLuis publishes no rates at all, so you cannot compare it against other shops without making contact first. Divers who need nitrox. Enriched air is not mentioned anywhere on the ScubaLuis site. If you dive nitrox daily, confirm availability before booking rather than assuming.

Technical and rebreather divers. ScubaLuis is described as a PADI recreational operation. There is no mention of decompression, trimix or CCR training.

Divers who want a shop address to plan around. With no published street address or opening hours, working out logistics takes a phone call.

Divers on a fixed, published course schedule. ScubaLuis states that it runs courses, but does not list which ones or when. If you need a confirmed Open Water start date before booking flights, get it in writing first.
