Blue Mayan Divers is a PADI operation on Calle 1 Sur specialising in private, personalised instruction. It is unusual among the smaller Cozumel shops in teaching the full professional pathway — up to and including Open Water Scuba Instructor.
Why Choose Blue Mayan
The course ladder goes further than the shop's size suggests. Most operations of this scale stop at Divemaster. Running courses to instructor level means the shop carries staff rated to teach instructors, which is a meaningfully higher bar.
That matters if you are considering going professional. Professional pathways are generally completed within one agency and, ideally, one shop — crossing between operators midway adds cost and paperwork. The shop is led by Santos Gonzales, a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, and describes itself as 100% PADI affiliated. The team present themselves as locals, and the site leans on that — expect island recommendations alongside the diving.

Black-Water Diving
This is the offering that separates Blue Mayan from the rest of the island: black-water diving, out over deep water at night with the boat lit, watching bioluminescent plankton and whatever rises with it.
It is marketed as suitable for all levels, with wetsuit, fins and mask supplied. Very few operators in Cozumel run it at all.
Seasonal bull shark diving runs in winter, and twilight and night dives are on the standard list alongside one-tank and two-tank trips and snorkelling.
The Training Path
Blue Mayan teaches further up the ladder than most shops this size — Discover Scuba, Open Water, Advanced, Rescue, Divemaster and Open Water Scuba Instructor. There is a Scuba Diver course for teenagers from age 10, a crossover for divers certified with another agency, and a Scuba Tune-up for anyone returning after a long gap.
Specialties include Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep and Wreck. Open Water, Advanced and Rescue are all available with eLearning, so the theory can be done before you fly.
Named sites in their own material include Palancar and El Paso del Cedral.
One Thing About Diving Cozumel
Cozumel's reefs run north to south along the sheltered western side, and the character changes as you move down. The southern sites — Palancar, Colombia, Punta Sur — are the deep walls and swim-throughs people travel here for. The northern and central reefs are shallower and calmer, which is where most training happens. Where a shop's boat goes says a lot about the day you will have.
