Overview

Zermatt is a neighbourhood panadería and pastelería a few streets back from the waterfront, behind the Museo de la Isla de Cozumel. It is not a sit-down café so much as a bakery you grab from, which is exactly what you want at 7:15 with a boat to catch.

What To Expect

Trays of Mexican sweet breads — conchas, orejas, empanadas de piña — plus fresh bolillos, cakes and pastries, priced in pesos and very cheap. You take a tray and tongs at the door, load up, and pay at the counter. There is a little outdoor seating, but most people take their bag and go. Vegetarian and vegan choices are among the breads.

Good To Know

Open Monday to Saturday 7:00 to 21:00 and Sunday 7:00 to 17:00. Budget prices, and cash in pesos is the simplest way to pay at a bakery like this. It is about three blocks inland from Avenida Melgar, close to the museum and an easy detour on the walk from a Centro hotel to the downtown dive piers.

Getting There

From the waterfront, walk inland to the corner of Avenida 5 Norte and Calle 4 Norte, behind the island museum. It is roughly a five-minute walk from the ferry pier and from most hotels in Centro.
