Overview

Freedom in Paradise, known to most people simply as the Rasta bar, sits on the beach next to the entrance to Punta Sur park, where the coast road turns north into Cozumel's windward shore. It is a barefoot, reggae-soundtracked shack with hammocks slung under palms, seaside tables and a full menu and bar, and it is the first or last stop on a lap of the island depending which way you drive it.

The Beach And Water

This is the open Caribbean side, exposed to the trade winds and the swell that rolls in unbroken. Surf here is often heavy and rip currents are common. Swimming is not recommended, and there are no lifeguards on this coast. Wade in the shallows if the sea is flat, get out if it is not, and save the actual swimming for the sheltered west side.

Day Pass And What's Included

No day pass. You order food and drinks and use the tables, chairs and hammocks. Prices are at the budget end for Cozumel. Bring cash, since card facilities on the east coast are patchy.

Good To Know

Open daily 10:00 to 18:00. It closes with the light, as most of this coast does. The shade is real, from palms and palapas.

Getting There

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to swim here?
No, not reliably. This is the open Caribbean side with heavy surf and frequent rip currents, and there are no lifeguards. Wade only if the sea is genuinely flat, and swim on the west coast instead.
Is there a cover charge?
No. You pay for food and drinks and use the tables, chairs and hammocks.
Do they take cards?
Bring cash. Card facilities along the east coast are unreliable.
What time do they close?
18:00. Like most of the east coast, the bar closes with the daylight.
Where exactly is it?
On the sand beside the entrance to Punta Sur Eco Park, where the south coast road turns around onto the windward shore.
