Punta Morena

Punta Morena is the most developed of the east-coast stops, a beach club and restaurant on the Carretera Costera Oriental with saltwater pools, a slide for children and a surf shop on site. It is the one place on the windward shore that gives you somewhere safe to get wet, which is precisely why the pools exist.

The Beach And Water

The sea in front of Punta Morena is open Caribbean with a genuine surf break. That is good news for surfers and bad news for swimmers: waves here are powerful, the beach shelves steeply in places and rip currents run along this coast. Swimming in the ocean is not safe here and there are no lifeguards. The saltwater pools are the alternative, and they are the reason families stop here rather than further along the coast.

Day Pass And What's Included

There is no fixed all-inclusive pass. You eat, drink and use the pools and loungers as a customer, with a minimum spend in practice rather than a gate fee. Surfboards and lessons are arranged through the shop on site. Bring cash.

Good To Know

Like the rest of the east coast, it runs on generator power and closes in the late afternoon. Check the surf report before committing to a lesson: the break works best with an easterly swell.
