The Coconut Shack, which also trades as the Liquor Box Coconut Cabana, is a small owner-run bar on the east coast road north of Playa Bosh. It is barely more than a palapa, a kitchen and a handful of tables with hammocks strung nearby, and it has a following out of proportion to its size for its fresh fish and its cocktails.
Open Caribbean, exposed to the trade winds like the rest of the windward shore. Waves break directly onto the sand, currents run along the beach and there are no lifeguards anywhere on this coast. Swimming is not recommended here. The safe swimming on Cozumel is all on the sheltered west and south side of the island, and the only reliably calm pocket on the east coast is the rock-protected cove at Chen Rio.
No entry fee and no day pass. You buy food and drinks and use the seating and hammocks. Carry cash, as card payment on this coast is unreliable and there is no ATM.
Like everything on the east side it opens in the morning and closes in the late afternoon, running on generator power with no mains electricity. Hours can shift with the weather and the season, so treat it as a stop on a lap of the island rather than a fixed destination.
On the east coast road, north of Playa Bosh, reached via the cross-island highway.
