Island Essentials

Our recommended island activities

Choosing the right dive center can make or break your Cozumel diving experience. If you are still planning the trip itself, our complete guide to diving Cozumel covers the reefs, the seasons and what a dive day costs. Dozens of professional operators work across the island's hotel zone and downtown San Miguel, and each offers something different — from small-group boutique charters to full-service PADI Five-Star resorts with fleets of boats. Whether you are a beginner looking for your first Open Water certification, an experienced diver seeking advanced drift diving at Maracaibo or Devil's Throat, or a traveller needing equipment rental and guided tours, compare operators on safety record, small-group policy, instructor experience, boat comfort and reviews to find the right match for diving Cozumel's protected marine park.

Our connections on the island run deep — the operators, the crews and the boats. Tell us what you want from your diving and we will point you at the right shop, often with rates that are not advertised.

What Separates One Cozumel Dive Shop From Another

Nearly every operator on this island dives the same reefs, on the same schedule, in the same conditions. What actually differs is smaller and matters more.

Group size. This is the single biggest variable. Shops on this island range from a hard cap of four divers per guide to boats carrying sixteen. On a drift dive the guide has to track everyone in a moving group, so the number changes what they can watch, what they can find, and how much of the dive is yours.

Whether the boat is theirs. Some operators own their boats and crew. Others buy seats on someone else's. It affects whether the schedule bends to the divers or the divers bend to the schedule.

Where the boat leaves from. Most Cozumel shops sit in town and run divers out to a marina — Fonatur, Caleta or Puerta Maya — before the boat leaves. A few have their own pier or dock. That decides how your morning starts, every day of the trip.

Who is actually in the water with you. A shop with four instructors is a different proposition from one built around a single owner-guide. Neither is better. They are different trips.

Agency. PADI is the most common here, SSI is well represented, and a handful teach both. The card is recognised worldwide either way. Read our PADI vs SSI comparison if you are choosing a training path rather than a shop.

The Questions Worth Asking

Before you commit, ask:

  • How many divers per guide, and per boat
  • Where does the boat leave from, and how do I get there
  • Is the marine park fee included
  • Do you pick up from my hotel, or from a hotel pier
  • Is Nitrox available, and is it included
  • What happens if the weather takes a day
  • Who will be guiding me, and will it be the same person all week

A shop that answers those clearly is telling you something about how it runs. A shop that gets vague is telling you something too.

Types Of Operator On This Island

Owner-guided operations. One or two people, small boats, often a hard cap on group size. You dive with the owner. The most consistent experience available here, and usually the hardest to book at short notice.

Full-service centers. A shop, a classroom, rental stock, Nitrox fills, multiple instructors and a training path that runs to professional level. Best if you are certifying, or if you want gear handled.

Resort-based operations. Attached to a hotel, often with a private pier. You walk from your room to the boat. Convenient, and the trade-off is usually less flexibility over sites.

Technical and specialist shops. A small number teach cave, decompression and sidemount, or run bull shark, black-water and cenote trips. Worth seeking out deliberately if that is why you are coming.

What Every Shop Here Has In Common

Whichever you choose, some things do not vary.

Every dive is a drift dive — the current carries you and you barely fin. The reef is inside a national marine park, so a park fee applies on every dive day, gloves are not permitted, and nothing is touched. Sunscreen is prohibited in the park. Water is warm year-round and visibility is routinely measured in tens of metres.

The reef itself is the northern end of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.

Where To Start

Browse the operators below, or read the individual guides — each covers group sizes, boats, courses, languages and where the trips actually leave from, and each says plainly what the shop does not publish.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many dive shops are there in Cozumel?
Dozens work across downtown San Miguel, the southern hotel zone and the marinas. This directory lists the operators individually, with a full guide for each covering group sizes, boats, courses and departure points.
What should I look for in a Cozumel dive shop?
Group size per guide is the biggest single variable, followed by where the boat departs from and whether the shop owns its boats. Ask whether the marine park fee is included, whether Nitrox is available, and whether you will have the same guide across your trip.
PADI or SSI in Cozumel?
Both are taught widely here and both certifications are recognised worldwide and accepted by every operator on the island. The shop you choose affects your training far more than the agency does.
Do Cozumel dive shops pick up from hotels?
Some collect from hotel piers along the southern coast road, some run a taxi from the shop to the marina, and some expect you to make your own way. It varies by operator and it shapes every morning of your trip, so confirm it before you book a room.
Is the marine park fee included in the dive price?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Cozumel's western reefs sit inside a national marine park and a fee applies on every dive day. Some operators include it and some collect it separately on the boat.
Do I need my own equipment to dive in Cozumel?
No. Every operator here rents full sets. Many divers bring their own mask because fit matters more than any other single piece of kit, and a leaking rental mask can ruin a dive.
