What Separates One Cozumel Dive Shop From Another

Nearly every operator on this island dives the same reefs, on the same schedule, in the same conditions. What actually differs is smaller and matters more.

Group size. This is the single biggest variable. Shops on this island range from a hard cap of four divers per guide to boats carrying sixteen. On a drift dive the guide has to track everyone in a moving group, so the number changes what they can watch, what they can find, and how much of the dive is yours.

Whether the boat is theirs. Some operators own their boats and crew. Others buy seats on someone else's. It affects whether the schedule bends to the divers or the divers bend to the schedule.

Where the boat leaves from. Most Cozumel shops sit in town and run divers out to a marina — Fonatur, Caleta or Puerta Maya — before the boat leaves. A few have their own pier or dock. That decides how your morning starts, every day of the trip.

Who is actually in the water with you. A shop with four instructors is a different proposition from one built around a single owner-guide. Neither is better. They are different trips.

The Questions Worth Asking

Before you commit, ask:

  • How many divers per guide, and per boat
  • Where does the boat leave from, and how do I get there
  • Is the marine park fee included
  • Do you pick up from my hotel, or from a hotel pier
  • Is Nitrox available, and is it included
  • What happens if the weather takes a day
  • Who will be guiding me, and will it be the same person all week

A shop that answers those clearly is telling you something about how it runs. A shop that gets vague is telling you something too.

Types Of Operator On This Island

Owner-guided operations. One or two people, small boats, often a hard cap on group size. You dive with the owner. The most consistent experience available here, and usually the hardest to book at short notice.

Full-service centers. A shop, a classroom, rental stock, Nitrox fills, multiple instructors and a training path that runs to professional level. Best if you are certifying, or if you want gear handled.

Resort-based operations. Attached to a hotel, often with a private pier. You walk from your room to the boat. Convenient, and the trade-off is usually less flexibility over sites.

Technical and specialist shops. A small number teach cave, decompression and sidemount, or run bull shark, black-water and cenote trips. Worth seeking out deliberately if that is why you are coming.

What Every Shop Here Has In Common

Whichever you choose, some things do not vary.

Every dive is a drift dive — the current carries you and you barely fin. The reef is inside a national marine park, so a park fee applies on every dive day, gloves are not permitted, and nothing is touched. Sunscreen is prohibited in the park. Water is warm year-round and visibility is routinely measured in tens of metres.

The reef itself is the northern end of the Mesoamerican Reef, the second-largest barrier reef system in the world.

Some collect from hotel piers along the southern coast road, some run a taxi from the shop to the marina, and some expect you to make your own way. It varies by operator and it shapes every morning of your trip, so confirm it before you book a room.
Is the marine park fee included in the dive price?
Sometimes, and it is worth asking. Cozumel's western reefs sit inside a national marine park and a fee applies on every dive day. Some operators include it and some collect it separately on the boat.
Do I need my own equipment to dive in Cozumel?
No. Every operator here rents full sets. Many divers bring their own mask because fit matters more than any other single piece of kit, and a leaking rental mask can ruin a dive.
