What Happens If I Lose My PADI Card on Vacation? (Don't Panic!)

Losing your certification card does not cancel your certification. PADI states plainly that "your PADI certification, physical certification card, or eCard will never expire" — the plastic card is a receipt, while the certification itself is a permanent record held in the agency's database. Less than most divers expect. According to PADI, the lookup "uses your name and date of birth to locate your diver record" — the certification number is not required.

• Your full legal name exactly as it appeared at the time of certification. If you have changed your name since, give the previous one as well — this is the single most common reason a record does not surface.
• Your date of birth, in an unambiguous format. Write it out rather than using digits, since day-first and month-first conventions differ between countries.
• Roughly when and where you certified. The year and the country or shop name help a professional pick you out of a list of similar names.
• Your agency. PADI and SSI use entirely different systems, and a shop needs to know which portal to open.

How to Get Your PADI eCard in the App

For most divers certified recently, the digital card already exists and costs nothing extra. PADI's eCard FAQ states that "PADI eCards are included with nearly every PADI course," with exceptions for Bubblemaker, Seal Team and Emergency First Response certifications issued by non-PADI members, and for divers under age ten.

There are two ways to reach it:

1. In the app. Download the PADI App from the Apple App Store or Google Play, sign in with the email address attached to your certification, and your eCards appear on the home screen.
2. On the web. Go to learning.padi.com/certifications, sign in, and choose "Certifications and Credentials" from your profile.

For older certifications — PADI's cut-off is 10 January 2023 — a digital card is not automatically included, and PADI says these can be purchased through PADI Dive Shops, with pricing that varies by location. PADI's online store also sells replacement physical cards and eCards, and PADI notes that costs differ by card type and design, that some designs carry a donation to the PADI AWARE Foundation, and that prices differ between the online store and independently operated dive centres. Because those prices are set locally and change, check the current figure at the PADI store or with a dive centre rather than trusting a number quoted in an article.

Do this before you leave the hotel: take a screenshot of the eCard once it loads. Dive boats and the pier at San Miguel are not places to discover that an app needs to phone home for a login token. A screenshot works with no signal at all.

If a physical card matters to you, order it when you are home. PADI says physical cards are printed and mailed within two business days but "may take two weeks or more to arrive" — which is longer than most Cozumel holidays.

How SSI Divers Replace a Lost Card

SSI's answer is similarly digital and, for the app itself, free. SSI's card replacement page directs divers to "download the MySSI App, create a free account, and see all your SSI certifications in one spot." SSI describes the app as giving 24/7 access to registered digital learning materials and certification cards, both online and offline — the offline part being genuinely useful on a dive boat.

Two SSI-specific details are worth knowing:

• SSI supports verification by QR code, with divers scanning a training centre's code and centres confirming credentials through the SSI system.
• SSI states clearly that it "does not issue replacements for NASDS or non-SSI certifications." If your original card came from a legacy agency that SSI absorbed, do not assume a replacement is available.

Will a Cozumel Dive Shop Accept a Digital Card or a Photo?

An eCard is designed for exactly this. PADI describes the eCard as "an electronic version of the plastic certification card" that "displays information that instructors or dive operations around the world need to verify certification." An SSI digital card in the MySSI App serves the same function. In practice, digital cards are widely accepted across the island, and a shop that can also run a database lookup has a second route to the same answer.

A photograph of an old plastic card is a weaker form of evidence, and it is worth understanding why rather than being surprised at the counter. A photo shows what a card looked like; it does not connect to the agency's record, and it cannot show whether a certification was later revised. Some shops will take it as supporting evidence alongside a lookup. Others will treat it as a prompt to run the lookup properly. Neither response is unreasonable, and neither is a judgement about you.

What a Dive Shop May Legitimately Do If You Cannot Prove Certification

This is the part most articles skip, and it is the part worth being honest about. If certification cannot be confirmed — the record does not surface, the name does not match, the agency is one the shop cannot check — a dive centre has a small number of legitimate options, and none of them are the shop being awkward:

• Ask for a checkout or assessment dive. A shallow, supervised dive where a dive guide watches your buoyancy, mask clearing, regulator recovery and gas awareness. This is standard practice worldwide when documentation is in doubt.
• Restrict the dive plan. Shallower sites, no wall dives, closer supervision, or a smaller group until the crew has seen you dive.
• Ask you to complete a dive medical form again, since the paperwork trail is being rebuilt from scratch.
• Decline the dive. A shop that takes an unverified diver onto a drift dive is carrying a risk it did not agree to and, in many cases, one its insurance does not cover.

A dive professional is responsible for everyone on the boat. When you cannot show a record, they are being asked to accept an unknown, and the safe answer is sometimes no.
